Jenkins Point is a very special community, rich in history, natural beauty, and very secluded.  Nestled in the nook of two plantations, Jenkins Point is one of Edisto's most elusive places.  Surrounded by two protected plantations in ACE Basin Project JP is a nature lover's paradise.  JP has the perfect location with close proximities to Steamboat Landing, Edisto Beach, as well as Charleston.  Each of our 31 lots has something special to offer, whether it is marsh views, tidal creek access, or huge grand oaks.  They are all beautiful..

Jenkins Point original Sales Plat

Naming it Oristo, Spanish Explorers discovered Edisto Island in the late sixteenth century, followed by the English who purchased it from the Edistow Indians in 1674.  Little more than a decade later, the Earl of Shaftesbury bestowed the first land grant of 600 acres on Point of Pines to Paul Grimball.  Grimball later built Brick House, America's first manor house, in 1703, and soon thereafter, sold it to the Jenkins family.
*Jenkins is one of the oldest names on Edisto Island.  The Jenkins family siginificantly contributed to the island through education, documentation of Edisto's early history and way of life, and, most notably, military service.  In 1776 the Muster Roll for the Revolutionay Co. of Edisto included three Jenkinses and during the Civil War, General Micha Jenkins served as a staff member under General Robert E. Lee.  The Jenkins family has ties to many plantations, including Brick House, Bleak Hall, Peter's Point, and Botany Bay.

According to an original plat filed with the South Carolina Historical Society, Jenkins Point was the eastern boundary of Chaplin Garden, 432 acres of William Seabrook's Plantation characterized by its magnificent mansion, formal gardens, and oak-lined drive.  The most wealthy plantation owner on Edisto Island, William Seabrook pioneered the use of salt marsh mud as  fertilizer and developed the steamboat line connecting Charleston and Savannah.  During the Civil War Seabrook Mansion served as the Union Army Headquarters while Edisto was occupied.  The Seabrook family has claimed ownership to many of Edisto's other plantations, including Oak Island, Old House, Cassina Point, SeaCloud, Gun Bluff, Seaside, and Edisto Beach until the 1920s.
