South Carolina is home to many beautiful beach communities. One such community is Edisto Beach. This seaside hideaway is not as popular as some of the other more well-known South Carolina vacation spots like Myrtle Beach and Charleston. However, the homes in Edisto Beach SC and the real estate in Edisto Beach SC are just as desirable. Between these properties and an area that has its own unique charm and appeal, most people that make it to Edisto Beach find it hard to leave.
Edisto Island History
Edisto Island is a South Carolina Barrier Island located in Colleton and Charleston Counties. In 1674, Edisto was purchased from the Edistow Indians by Lord Proprietor Anthony Ashley Cooper (http://charleston.locale.com). The English settlers that descended upon Edisto experimented with several crops including rice, indigo, and cotton. Cotton became king until the boll weevil severely damaged the cotton industry and the focus turned to farming, shrimping, and fishing. To this day, Edisto remains a small, quiet town that sees a surge in its population during the summer months. There are no hotels on Edisto and it is during the summer months that rental units are occupied by vacationers.
Parks and Recreation
With a local population of less than 1000, the parks and recreation of the area are by necessity different from the norm. Sports teams do not dominate the agenda. In fact, much of the focus on parks and recreation for Edisto Beach is on the development and maintenance of trails that allow residents and visitors to explore this barrier island from one end to the other. The Edisto Beach State Park is home to most of the trails and features trails that are ADA accessible so that almost anyone can enjoy this outdoor recreational pursuit (http://southcarolinaparks.com).
Attractions and Events
Edisto Beach is remarkable for its lack of commercialization, especially when it is compared to other South Carolina cities and towns located at or near beach areas. Not to worry though, there is more than enough to keep tourists occupied during their visits (http://tripadvisor.com). A beautiful beach awaits and for the more adventurous, fishing charters and boat tours are available. Kids will enjoy the serpentarium and for those that love to compete, golf is avaiable.
Despite its small population, Edisto Beach is home to many annual events. Late summer hosts the Edisto Beach Music and Shag Fest. Soon after comes the Edisto Shrimp Fest. If music, dancing, and food do not appeal to the locals and their visitors, October and its cooler weather, brings the Edisto and Beyond Plantation Tours. Rounding out the year is the Annual Edisto Beach Christmas Parade. For a full slate of events, see the Edisto Beach website (http://edistobeach.com).
Edisto Beach's charm and appeal are undeniable. Its history, recreational opportunites, attractions and activities, and events keep visitors returning year after year. The wide variety of homes in Edisto Beach SC and real estate in Edisto Beach SC make it possible for visitors to find exactly what they need to enjoy all the many benefits of this quiet, charming coastal town.
